Tuesday Pre-Tournament Notes

MILWAUKEE, Wisc., July 28, 2015 - The Epson Tour, Road to the LPGA, makes its first trip to the state of Wisconsin since 2007 for the inaugural PHC Classic at Brown Deer Park Golf Course from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2. Admission is free for all three days of competition.

The top 144 up-and-coming professionals from the United States and around the world will compete for a $100,000 total tournament purse in the 54-hole stroke play format. The winner of the PHC Classic will earn $15,000 and take a big step up the Volvik Race for the Card money list. The top 10 on the end-of-season money list will earn LPGA Tour membership for the 2016 season.

The PHC Classic is the first professional golf event in Milwaukee since 2009, the last year of the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee. Brown Deer Park hosted the PGA Tour from 1994 through 2009 (1994-2003 - Greater Milwaukee Open). The list of players that have won at Brown Deer Park includes Scott Hoch, Ben Crane, Corey Pavin and Bo Van Pelt. The last time the Epson Tour came to Wisconsin was for the 2007 Aurora Health Care Championship at Geneva National Golf Club.

KENOSHA NATIVE CARLY WERWIE EXCITED TO BE BACK IN BADGER STATE

Kenosha native Carly Werwie, one of four Wisconsinites in the field, is excited that the Epson Tour will be making its return to the Badger state at this week’s PHC Classic even though it may not have sunk in yet.

“It’s weird to just drive 40 minutes and to see all of the Epson signs and everyone here,” Werwie admitted.

Werwie, a two-time Journal Sentinel Wisconsin Player of the Year, is looking forward to putting on a show in front of her home state.

“I’m happy that people will be able to come and watch because a lot of people want to be able to watch you play but you’re always so far away,” Werwie explained. “With it being close to home this week, hopefully they can come out and see me compete.”

While the University of Wisconsin grad grew up playing in the state she has limited experience at Brown Deer Park.

“I know there was a junior event I played in and then they host a Brown Deer Women’s Amateur event and I played in that one year but I was always gone so I’ve only played a couple of times.”

Despite not having a lot of experience on the track, Werwie is excited that professional golf is back in Milwaukee.

“I think that it’s great that it’s back in Milwaukee,” Werwie said. “It’s a great city and it’s a course that knows how to run a tournament which I think will be a lot of fun. I think the girls will really enjoy all of that.”

BREANNA ELLIOTT COMING OFF A WIN IN ALBANY

Breanna Elliott will head to the PHC Classic coming off the momentum of her first career victory at the Fuccillo Kia Championship at Capital Hills.

“This is so sweet, I am so pumped and this is just unbelievable,” said the free spirited Elliott, who has green hair, after her win. “I’m so happy right now, this is what I have been working for and this is huge for me. This is the first step in the right direction. This is for my family back home, I know they are going to be celebrating tonight.”

In addition to the first place check that moved her from 78th on the Volvik Race for the Card money list to 23rd, Elliott won a 2015 Snow White Kia Optima LX courtesy of Fuccillo Kia of Schenectady.

“I’m going home to Australia on Monday so they’re going to keep it until I get back which is good because I don’t have to worry about it,” Elliott explained. “I just have to sign some papers and then it’s all good and when I come back I’ll drive it to South Dakota and the rest of them.”

While Elliott was happy with the win and all that came with it she knows that she has to get back to work this week at Brown Deer Park.

“You get a day to celebrate and that’s it,” Elliott said. “I’m feeling alright so we’ll see how the week goes.”

Milena Savich and her sister Ariana were eliminated from the Golf Channel reality series Altered Course on Monday. They were the final female team standing and were one episode from the reaching the finals. Savich is a rookie on the Epson Tour…Rookie Augusta James comes into the PHC Classic after a T2 result in Albany that moved her from ninth to third on the Volvik Race for the Card money list. The 22-year-old leads all rookies in earnings…Jimin Kang, tenth on the money list, returns after missing the last three events since withdrawing from the Island Resort Championship in late June. She is a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour…Eight that played in the Meijer LPGA Classic last week are in the field this week (Chie Arimura, Cydney Clanton, Victoria Elizabeth, Nicole Jeray, Birdie Kim, Christine Meier, Elizabeth Nagel and Caroline Westrup)…There are three Epson Tour members in the RICOH Women’s British Open this week (Rebecca Artis, Brooke Henderson and Su Oh).
