AVERY GEORGE WAS BORN IN MOBILE

First-year Epson Tour player Avery George (Perry, Georgia) was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Her family moved out of Alabama when she was in the 7th grade and before she got into golf, but she remembers running around on the Magnolia Grove course with her father, Greg. She also remembers “hacking-it-around” with her dad at Azalea Golf Course.

“I’m still Alabama at heart,” said George, who still comes back to the state to go hunting and unwind in Deer Park, Alabama from time-to-time. “I love the golf course, you kind of get a vibe from Robert Trent Jones courses. They all feel similar. I love being able to cut corners.”

George is soaking up being back in the state of Alabama. She arrived at Capitol Hill at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday and didn’t leave until close to 6:00 p.m.

“I just love being out here,” said George. “It’s not everyday that I get to come play golf in Alabama.”

She didn’t start playing golf seriously until she moved to Tennessee in high school. Softball was her first love, but she gravitated to golf in high school and got a scholarship to play at Middle Tennessee State where she was First-Team All-C-USA as a senior in 2016.

George has had a respectable first year on Tour. She has one top 10 finish and ranks 66th on the money list.

“It’s a learning experience, but I feel like I am adjusting well to it,” said George. “I’ve gotten the hang of it after a rocky start. I just learned that I need to do my own thing. I also figured out how many tournaments in a row I can play.”

George’s mom, Ramona, will be out Capitol Hill watching this weekend.

“I went to Academy Sports and bought some Alabama shirts, it’s buy one, get one,” said George while laughing. “I feel like I can have my best finish of the year here because I feel at home and I’m relaxed. People here just give you southern hospitality.”

George will tee at 7:11 a.m. on Friday in the first-round. She was born on July (7) 11.

Everything is lining up perfectly this week.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL’ER READY FOR BIG STAGE

Brooke Sansom (Pike Road, Alabama) committed to Auburn when she was just 15 years old. Three years later, Sansom will head to Auburn in a few months. This week, she is playing on a sponsors exemption at the Guardian Championship.

“I’m so thrilled, it was so unexpected and this is a dream come true,” said Sansom, who will redshirt her first semester at Auburn starting in January. “I always come over to this course when Wynlakes Golf & Country Club is closed. I love this course. The greens are great, the fairways look amazing and it is definitely one of my favorite courses to play out here.”

Sansom was a 2016 AJGA Rolex All-American and won the 6A state championship in May.

“Playing with these girls is really going to help me at Auburn,” said Sansom. “Hopefully I can learn a little bit from them and know what to expect when I go to Auburn.”

Sansom said the goal at the top of her list is to make the cut.
