The Epson Tour begins its final stretch of events in South Bend, Indiana, with only five more chances to tee it up and make moves on the Official Points List. The Four Winds Invitational at South Bend Country Club has seen LPGA Tour stars hoist the trophy in the past and hopes to continue that unofficial tradition in 2024. The 132-player field competes in the 13th playing of the Four Winds Invitational, from August 30th to September 1st. Here are five things to know about the Four Winds Invitational:

The Field is Now Based on the Points List

The Four Winds Invitational is the first of the final five tournaments on the Epson Tour’s 2024 schedule, which brings a format change to the event. The 132-player field is seeded based on the Epson Tour points list rather than the priority list, which is used up until the end of the season. This format change will be in effect through the Epson Tour Championship in the beginning of October.

Becca Huffer Returns to Alma Mater

University of Notre Dame alum Becca Huffer once again returns to her alma mater to compete in the Four Winds Invitational. During her senior season with the Fighting Irish, Huffer was named team captain and BIG EAST Sports Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. The 34-year-old has played in the event since 2021 and earned a T2 result in 2023.

The Past Champions List is Strong

The list of Four Winds Invitational past champions is one to boast about, with two major champions and many LPGA Tour players having hoisted the trophy while on the Road to the LPGA. Brooke Henderson won the Invitational in 2015 before earning status on the biggest stage in women’s golf, while Lilia Vu earned her win in 2021 before gaining her full LPGA Tour card for the 2022 season. Additionally, current LPGA Tour athletes Gabriela Ruffels, Yan Liu and Perrine Delacour have walked away from South Bend victorious.

Who Will be the First to Two Wins in 2024?

A unique opportunity lies for 12 athletes this week, and that’s the chance to become the first player to get their second win in 2024. Each tournament leading up to the Four Winds Invitational has seen a different champion, with eight countries represented among those winners. Before heading to South Bend in 2023, three athletes had already secured a second win, with Gabriela Ruffels, Jiwon Jeon and Jenny Bae each hoisting two trophies. Now, with only five tournaments left, every point counts in the Race for the Card, and another win could put each of the 12 athletes closer to securing their LPGA Tour card.

Could an LPGA Tour Card be Secured?

Gabriela Ruffels left South Bend in 2023 with the Four Winds Invitational trophy and an LPGA Tour Card. Following her third win, the Epson Tour sophomore had mathematically secured her spot in the Epson Tour’s top 10 and ultimately went on to be named Epson Tour Player of the Year. Now, with just five events left, three athletes have passed the 1,000-point threshold, which poses the question of when the first of 15 cards for 2024 will be given out. Only time will tell if the Four Winds Invitational will propel yet another athlete to the biggest stage of women’s golf in 2025.
